After doing your own research on PCOS and talking to your primary care doctor, you want some honest answers.
The good news is that booking a gynecologist appointment for PCOS evaluation will not only provide you with an actual diagnosis, you'll also receive a custom treatment plan from a PCOS specialist.
Here's what you can expect at your first visit with Dr. Anna Le at our PCOS clinic in Annandale, VA.
Will I Leave My Gynecologist Appointment for PCOS Evaluation With an Actual Diagnosis?
At the beginning of your appointment, Dr. Le will ask you several questions about your PCOS symptoms.
They may include when your periods first became irregular, how many periods you've had in the past year, where and when your acne or chin hair cropped up, and if you've received any PCOS treatments. Try to answer her questions to the best of your knowledge. If you can't recall the exact date or month, it's OK to estimate!
After your conversation with Dr. Le, you'll have a pelvic exam and, in most cases, a transvaginal ultrasound in the same room.
If your ovaries carry the many small follicles that give PCOS its name and your cycles are irregular, she can give you the diagnosis before you leave, since those are two of the three criteria.
You'll also have blood drawn that day for your androgen levels, thyroid, prolactin, and a fasting glucose or insulin, and you'll go over the results with her.
What If My PCOS Labs Come Back Normal Again?
If your androgen labs come back in the normal range, you may still leave with a PCOS diagnosis, because Dr. Le only needs two of the three criteria and your cycle history and ultrasound can supply both. She'll tell you which two you met.
If she can't make the call yet, Dr. Le, a FACOG-certified gynecologist, will tell you what she's watching for, book the repeat labs, and start you on something for the symptom that brought you in, a progestin to bring on a period or a combined pill to calm the acne.
If pregnancy is anywhere in your plans, mention it at this visit. Dr. Ziad Hubayter, who leads our fertility program, works from the same chart, and the fertility services you'd need later, ovulation medication, IUI, and IVF, come from the same team.
