Who may consider fertility testing
A fertility evaluation looks for factors that may affect ovulation, ovarian reserve, sperm, the fallopian tubes, and the uterus. Your clinician tailors testing to your age, history, how long you have been trying, and family-building goals. Testing is commonly recommended after 12 months of trying to conceive if the partner providing the eggs is younger than 35, or after six months at age 35 or older. Earlier evaluation may be appropriate for irregular cycles, known uterine or tubal concerns, suspected sperm factors, recurrent pregnancy loss, prior cancer treatment, or plans involving donor sperm, eggs, embryos, or a gestational carrier.
What your evaluation may include
- Hormone labs are selected for your situation. Ovarian reserve testing, such as AMH, helps estimate possible response to fertility medication. AMH does not measure egg quality or predict pregnancy on its own.
- Transvaginal ultrasound lets your clinician examine the uterus and ovaries.
- Semen analysis assesses sperm count, movement, and shape when sperm is part of the family-building plan.
- HSG tubal evaluation uses an X-ray to check whether the fallopian tubes are open, when appropriate for your situation.
- A written plan with pricing brings together the findings, next steps, and expected costs before you proceed.

It can help to have the following information available for your discussion:
- Any previous fertility test results or treatment records you have
- Your health history and a list of medicines and supplements you take
- Notes on your cycle patterns, past pregnancies, how long you have been trying, family-building goals, and questions

Your consultation and results
Your evaluation starts with a consultation and medical history. Many testing plans can be completed within one menstrual cycle, followed by a visit to review the results and possible next steps. At the results visit, your clinician explains what the findings can and cannot tell you and helps you weigh the options and costs. Depending on your situation, next steps may include timed intercourse, IUI, IVF, surgery, donor options, or no immediate treatment. Sometimes testing does not identify one clear cause.
